Our Coast, Our Sea - AONB and EMS Management Plan launched today
22 October 2009
The AONB covers coastal land from Amble to Berwick and the EMS the adjoining marine area from Alnmouth to Fast Castle Head in Scotland. Together they encompass some of the most dramatic coastal scenery and marine features in the country. The area is recognised internationally for its special and qualifying features. It is important for its landscape, biodiversity, and cultural heritage. Thousands of people who live, work and visit the area also depend on these features. The area provides places for spiritual reflection, recreation and enjoyment. Many people and businesses depend on the area for their economic livelihoods. In a time of great environmental upheaval the coast is at the forefront of the challenges posed by climate change. As the popularity of the area rises, so pressures on the landscape and environment increase, such as new housing, marine structures, growing visitor numbers on land and at sea and changing farming, fishing and industrial practices. It is essential that the management of the AONB and EMS rises to these challenges while conserving the unique natural features, tranquility and special-ness of the area.
