Our Coast, Our Sea - Homes to roost

16 June 2010

Northumberland Wildlife Trust has donated £500 to the Northumbria Bird Ringing Group to assist with the purchase of much needed barn owl nesting boxes.

The donation has been made from the Trust’s 2010 Bird Bonanza Appeal launched earlier in the year and which, to date, has raised £11,750.

Over the years, barn owls have made a successful come back into many areas through habitat improvements and the installation of nest boxes after many derelict barns and farm buildings, which would once have been suitable homes, have either been knocked down or turned in barn conversions for humans.

The installation of barn owl nesting boxes has gone some way towards ameliorating this loss of habitat by providing a new nesting habitat and, the extra boxes will enable new areas to be utilised over a wider area thereby encouraging barn owls to spread further throughout the Region
