Our Coast, Our Sea - Northumberland Wildlife Trust's new hide at Hauxley
5 November 2009
Visitors to Northumberland Wildlife Trust’s Reception hide at Hauxley in Northumberland will now be able to learn more about the building from four newly installed information panels.
The panels were made possible thanks to very generous funding from The Community Foundation and include information on the hide’s construction from Scandinavian timber, its geothermal heating system and wildlife friendly turf roof.
The hide, which was built in 2000, offers magnificent panoramic views across the whole of Druridge Bay and on a clear day, visitors can see Souter Lighthouse near South Shields, 25 miles away.
A huge variety of birds from all over the world visit Hauxley throughout the year to rest, feed and nest, which means that no season is the same.
The hide is very popular with bird watchers, tourists and residents of the area. The building is also used for education classes and by community groups such as the Astronomical Society. It is estimated that over 10,000 people call into the hide each year.
