Our Coast, Our Sea - Prizes for Mammals

5 September 2011

The Northumbria Mammal Group is proud to announce that we have a small grant from the OPAL Partnership to help people get to know about the mammals living on their doorsteps and in the local countryside. So, we have organized a ‘Mammals Race’ for the area.

There are some great prizes up for grabs and the categories are:
•For the most mammal records; ‘Mammals of the British Isles Handbook: 4th edition’, Edited by S. Harris and D. W. Yalden.
•For records from the most 1km squares; ‘Animal Tracks and Signs’ by Bang and Dahlstrom.
•For the greatest number of mammal species recorded; ‘Whales, Dolphins and Seals, A Field Guide to the Marine Mammals of the World’, by Shirihai and Jarrett.
•For the most unusual mammal record; ‘The Path of the Panther’, Northumbrian Big Cat Diaries, by Ian Bond.

Taking part is easy, fun, free and open to all, and this is what you do:
•The Mammal Race runs from 1st September to 30th September 2011. Entries to be in by October 8th.
•As you drive around, or walk, or look in your garden, write down the mammals, or evidence or signs of them (eg molehills) that you find, within our recording region of Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear and Cleveland. Use the recording form on our web pages www.northumbriamammalgroup.co.uk
•Only one record of a mammal species on a site will be counted (eg 25 rabbits in one place count as 1 record, one rabbit and one molehill counts as two)
•Make sure you include your contact details – postal or email address, so that we can contact you if you win.
•Your entry automatically qualifies you for free membership of the Mammal Group until May 2012, which gives you all the benefits of our quarterly magazine, free entry to most events, opportunities for training, and surveys.
