Our Coast, Our Sea - Take a walk on the wild side

26 May 2010

Explore the rich plant life of the Northumberland Coast AONB

Enjoy the early summer pink perfusion of the thrift covered saltmarsh, multi coloured swathes of flowering plants of the whin or dune grassland, the rich yellow flowers and almond scent of gorse. All of these colourful, or rare and unique plants and more are all to be found on the Northumberland coast. This rich diversity of grassland and associated habitats within the Northumberland coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) has long been recognised as one of the special features of the coast.

As part of the celebrations for International Year for Biological Diversity the Northumberland Coast AONB has organised a series of guided walks with a local wild flower expert – Roger Manning, Chairman of Alnwick Wildlife Group.

There are three in the series 29th May at Bamburgh, meet in the car park below the Castle, 5th June Alnmouth, meet at the Boathouses Car Park and 12th June at Cheswick Dunes, just south of Scremeston, meet in the small car park at the end of the road.

All walks will start at 14.00, are free and will last around 2 hours. Tom Cadwallender Natural and Cultural Heritage Officer for the AONB said `these walks are a great opportunity to experience and learn about the wonderful flowers and the diversity of the Northumberland coast in the company of an enthusiastic and very knowledgeable guide`
