Our Coast, Our Sea - Worms rescued in Lindisfarne Castle garden
11 January 2010
Temperatures of -10C threatened the worms in the wormery in the garden at Lindisfarne Castle. Philippa Hodkinson, the National Trust’s gardener at Lindisfarne Castle, explained that although the wormery is insulated with straw and the liquid is constantly drained from the bottom of the wormery, the exceptionally low temperatures required that the wormery and its inhabitants were moved to a volunteer’s shed to escape the cold. Once the weather is warmer, the worms will return to the garden, which was designed by Gertrude Jekyll.
Lindisfarne Castle and garden is open at weekends during the winter, and during February half term – see the events calendar for further details.
