Our Coast, Our Sea - Young Marine Rangers

The Young Marine Rangers is a new Berwickshire youth initiative run by the St Abbs and Eyemouth Voluntary Marine Reserve in partnership with Connect Youth Services.

We are looking for young people aged 13 – 18 who want to learn about and help protect Berwickshire’s special coastal environment.

The project involves 1 task per month where you will be discovering the marine environment and practically helping to look after it. Each task will include a short classroom session and a practical outdoors session. Examples of classroom sessions include: whale and dolphin biology, impacts of marine litter and ocean processes. Examples of practical outdoor sessions include: beach cleans, rocky shore surveys and surfing (full details of tasks, dates and times are listed below). A packed lunch will be provided at lunchtime. There will also be an opportunity to gain a PADI Skin Diver qualification and work towards several accreditation schemes including the Dynamic Youth Development Awards.

As this is the first year the project is being run, numbers are limited and if you sign up for the project you will be expected to attend each task.

The project is completely free – all equipment, lunches and materials are included – you just need to make sure you are able to get to the task meeting location.
If you would like to sign up for the project then please complete the application form and either send it to the address below or email it back to me by Wednesday 4th January. As this is a pilot project, numbers are limited. Applicants will be notified as soon as possible after the 4th January if they have been successful on this occasion, any unsuccessful applicants will be given the first places on the next project. The first meeting of the group will be a fish and chip supper at Giacopazzi’s in Eyemouth on Tuesday 10th January so keep that date free in your diary.
